Replacement programs can support sustainability when they improve energy performance, eliminate persistently inefficient equipment, introduce more durable or serviceable products, and include responsible disposition of retired assets.

However, replacing functional equipment solely because a newer model exists is not automatically the more sustainable choice. Remaining useful life and the environmental consequences of manufacturing and transporting replacement products should also be considered.
