Functional performance testing evaluates whether equipment and systems operate according to defined project requirements under relevant operating conditions.
Testing should examine the functions that guests and employees will actually use rather than simply confirming that equipment powers on. For hospitality televisions, this might include programming, remote controls, content access, casting, and management functions. For HVAC equipment (PTAC units, VTACs, etc), it may involve control responses, heating and cooling operation, operating modes, and appropriate system interactions.
Test procedures should reflect manufacturer instructions, project specifications, and the intended operating environment.
Commissioning should be planned during hotel project design so performance requirements can guide procurement and installation.
A commissioning plan establishes testing requirements, responsibilities, documentation, and acceptance procedures for hotel technology.

Technology upgrades should be evaluated for new usability barriers as well as new capabilities.
